Meaford is a community worth getting right. Residents increasingly feel pressure from rapid growth, rising costs, infrastructure demands and a large scale project being proposed without enough local control. These five priorities reflect what residents have told Darcy matters most — and what a focused, experienced councillor can actually deliver.
Roads, Bridges & Infrastructure First
Safe, reliable infrastructure is the foundation of everything else. Before expanding government we must fix the basics. We cannot approve growth or industrial pressure without infrastructure readiness.
Establish a public “Infrastructure Priority Dashboard”
Develop a transparent, multi-year infrastructure plan with clear timelines and budgets wile prioritizing infrastructure spending based on safety and long-term cost savings.
Ensure growth and major projects do not outpace municipal capacity by completing a Capacity Study on all services to determine its service capacity before major expansion costs are required.
Ensure rural roads receive the same attention as urban streets. Develop an annual rural road audit policy.
Improve stormwater resilience and shoreline protection.
Affordable & Attainable Housing
Meaford must remain a place where people of all ages and incomes can afford to live. Council must innovate to help local workers, seniors, and young families stay in Meaford. Growth should benefit local residents first - not just investors and seasonal buyers.
Create a "Local Workforce Housing Partnership" that includes existing businesses, developers, the Chamber of Commerce and non-profits.
Support zoning and policy changes that enable a greater variety of housing types by fast tracking duplexes, triplexes and accessory dwelling units and allow for mixed-use downtown revitalization projects.
Advocate for seniors-oriented housing options that allow long-time residents to age in place.
Ensure new housing development is matched with appropriate infrastructure and services.
Preserve rural character and farmland from uncontrolled sprawl.
Support for Agriculture & Rural Communities
Farming and rural life are central to Meaford's identity and economy. Our farms and villages are not an afterthought—they are the foundation of Meaford.
Work with agricultural organizations to address the challenges facing Meaford's farming community including the creation of an annual "Rural Community Roundtable".
Protect prime agricultural land from inappropriate development.
Continue to expand on existing and new agri-tourism opportunities.
Improve broadband advocacy in rural areas.
Ensure rural residents have a strong voice in municipal planning and budget decisions.
Fiscal Responsibility & Accountable Governance
Meaford residents deserve a council that listens, explains decisions clearly, spends wisely and lives within its means. Taxpayers should never feel major decisions are happening behind closed doors.
Ensure long-term financial planning protects future generations from inherited debt or significantly underfunded infrastructure repalcement.
Require the development of annual Departmental Business Plans as part of the budget process that link staffing and operating costs with approved Strategic Priorities and Service Standards.
Demand rigorous cost-benefit analysis before approving new staffing or major capital projects and oppose tax increases that are not justified by clear, demonstrated community benefit.
Ensure that public input from Committees, public engagement sessions and surveys are heard and openly discussed at the Council table.
Oppose closed-door decision-making and advocate for full transparency in council proceedings.
Recreation & Community Wellness
Strong communities are built around healthy families and connected neighbourhoods.
Ensure that any Community Benefit Agreement which may come from the TC Energy proposal is binding and includes significant recreation and shoreline investment.
Expand recreational programming opportunities by partnering with local service providers, not-for-profits and special events companies.
Improve parks and washroom maintenance by developing clear policies on service level expectations.
Advocate for additional funding to rehabilitate, expand or replace aging recreation facilities including the Blue Dolphin Pool and the Meaford & St. Vincent Community Centre.
Support youth recreation partnerships.
